UPDATE:  WE ARE SOLD OUT! Add yourself to the waitlist and cross your fingers…

A worldwide social media phenom will take over Twitter this Thursday, September 1st. Thanks to social media instigator Rick Bakas, who spoke at the first Eat.Drink.Tweet. event earlier this year, wineries and wine lovers will gather at numerous events and headquarters around the world to chat on Twitter — and other social media sites — about cabernet. Franc, sauv, or cab-based blend, it’ll be the talk of Twitter under the hashtag #cabernetday. <What’s a hashtag? Read this.>

Rick asked me to be the Canadian co-host for Cabernet Day, and I’ll be tweeting up a storm over at @okanagantaste on Twitter, where the topic is always BC wine. Poplar Grove Winery, who recently opened up beautiful new facility, check out the view, will be our headquarters <Poplar Grove: Twitter | Facebook>.

Join is in person for our Cabernet and Pizza Tweetup from 6pm to 8pm (PST, in case you were wondering). A whopping $20 gets you wine from some great Okanagan producers, and pizza. Not in the Okanagan? Join us through the #cabernetday hashtag, and be sure to follow @okanagantaste on Twitter.

Poplar Grove will be pouring its 2007 Cabernet Franc, a bronze medal winner at the Decanter World Wine Awards, as well as its new blend called CSM, a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot-Cabernet Franc-Syrah blend.

Joining them will be…

Painted Rock <Painted Rock: Twitter | Facebook>, pouring their 2008 Painted Rock Estate Red Icon — a blend described by John Schreiner as having “inviting areas of cassis and spice cake, leading to sweet berry flavours…” — as well as their SOLD OUT 2008 Painted Rock Cabernet Sauvignon. That’s right, SOLD OUT!

Stag’s Hollow Winery <Stag’s Hollow:  Twitter> is breaking out its not-yet-released 2009 Cabernet Franc, so new there’s no tasting sheet yet (it’ll be there on September 1), but I can reveal it’s spent 18 months in French oak, and has a wee hint — three percent — of Merlot.  It’ll also be poured at a similar event in Edmonton hosted by Winerunners, so Tweeters from both events can share their thoughts. UPDATE: here’s the tasting sheet, plus Stag’s will also be pouring The Heritage Block, a Bordeaux-style blend.

Nichol Vineyards <Nichol: Twitter | Facebook>  will be showcasing its 2008 Cabernet Franc, and Laughing Stock Vineyards <Laughing Stock:  Twitter | Facebook will pour its 2008 Portfolio, a Bordeaux blend. Tinhorn Creek Vineyards <Tinhorn:  Twitter | Facebook> is pouring a 2009 Cabernet Franc, which I personally enjoyed at  recent concert in Tinhorn’s outdoor amphitheatre.

Rounding out the tasting will be two cabernet francs — 2008 and 2009 — from Hillside Estate Winery <Hillside:  Twitter | Facebook> and Kettle Valley Winery, the latter pouring two Cabernet Sauvignons, Crest and Barber.

UPDATE: A late addition to Cabernet Day! Township 7 <Township: Twitter | Facebook> will join us to pour a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tickets are available online and must be purchased in advance.

Be sure to watch your social media streams for other BC wineries celebrating Cabernet Day with special events, tastings, deals and more. And heck, open a bottle of your favourite cab on September 1 and join the conversation.

PS:  There will be some giveaways! Visit the Cab’n'Za Facebook event page on Facebook for deets.

  1. Appreciating the hard work you put into your blog and detailed information you provide. It’s good to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same old rehashed information. Thanks!
