Social media replaces the golf game, and begets another hockey contest.

I'm freakin awesome at glow-in-the-dark mini-golf.
I’m freakin’ awesome at glow-in-the-dark mini-golf.

Got a good hockey proverb? Post it in the comments below. Best one wins a seat at the next Eat.Drink.Tweet. event, Beer’n'Blogs. Why hockey? Because Canucks blogger Harrison Mooney of Pass It to Bulis fame is one of the speakers! Now back to this post…

Years ago, I attempted to learn how to play golf. The last time I took a lesson, it was in the midst of the NHL playoffs, and I ticked off my classmates by opening up my classic flip cellphone to call my aunt and check the score of a Detroit Red Wings game every few minutes (I knew the goalie, since retired). Yes, it was a different era. By the way, my short game isn’t bad. And by short game, I mean glow-in-the-dark mini-golf.

Why was I trying to improve my non-existent game? I’d recently read a number of articles about deals being made on the golf course, and how women should get out on the links and start making some of those deals.

As I said, it was a while ago.

Flash forward. Social media has replaced the golf course for me. In fact, Twitter, in particular, has hooked me up with many great people and “Hey, we follow each other!” serves as a much better icebreaker for me than “what’s your handicap?”.

Case in point:  Ryan Pinder (Twitter:  @ryanpinder) and I have followed each other for some time since his days as the play-by-play guy for the Penticton Vees (Twitter: @pentictonvees). As I watched Ryan write three, or maybe four, press releases and blog posts at the opening game of the Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Tournament at the South Okanagan Events Centre — the SOEC graciously let me and several of my Twitter pals on the media deck for some live-tweeting — we bonded. And we’d only just met IRL (in real life).

Ryan recently took is play-by-play skills to the Abbotsford Heat. I gave him tips on using Hootsuite; he explained why hockey fans will be paying attention to a young man known as “The Nuge”.  And then we cooked up a little contest.

Once Ryan reaches 800 followers on his Twitter account, he and I will put together a VIP package for one of his lucky followers to attend a Heat game at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre. We’re talking a behind the scenes tour, tickets, maybe some popcorn…and someday, when Ryan has moved on to call plays for the NHL, you’ll be able to say you tweeted him back in the good old days.

Now go. Follow Mr. Pinder. And by the way, the home opener for the Heat is October 14th. Hint hint. And maybe, if you’d like, post a tweet to me (Twitter:  @allisonmmarkin) that says, oh, I don’t know, how about:  “Thanks @allisonmmarkin for hooking me up with @ryanpinder. He’s the man!”.

Contest alert! Who wants to be hockey media for a game?

<First, let me preface this post with a moment for the members of the Locomotiv hockey team, their family and friends. мир к Ярославль.>

I actually know this guy. But then, everyone in Canada is somehow related to a hockey player, right?

I actually know this guy. But then, everyone in Canada is somehow related to a hockey player, right?

Now. Who wants to hang out with me on the press deck at the South Okanagan Events Centre and watch some hockey? The fine folks at the SOEC <like the SOEC on Facebook> have given me and some of my “tweeps” media access — complete with food and bevvies — on day one of the Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Hockey Tournament. And you can hang with me at this hockey-themed tweetup and pretend you’re all, like, John Shorthouse* or something.

But, you gotta work for it. The reward is…wait for it…actual media accreditation for the 4pm game on Sunday, September 11th, Calgary vs. San Jose. You will come with me through the media entrance at the SOEC. We will go to the media deck where you can taunt your friends in the “regular” seats. You’ll get fed and watered, just like the rest of the hockey media hanging around. Read the rest of this entry »

Repost if you know someone who’s been attacked by penguins.

Repost this if you, or someone you love, has been affected by roaming packs of wild penguins. Or who suffers from the tragedy of ice cream headaches. Or who’s been attacked by wild penguins while having an ice cream headache.

This dude means business.

This dude means business.

A funny thing happened on the way to update my Facebook status recently. I was sent a private message from a Facebook friend — let’s call him Mr. Penguin — who had connected with me earlier this year, and who was interested in learning more about what I do with social media and wine tourism, especially the forthcoming 2013 North American Wine Bloggers Conference. Great, I thought, a fellow wine and social media addict.

Mr. Penguin graciously wanted to let me know why he was unfriending me. I sent Mr. Penguin a note alerting him that I was going to use his message in a blog post. He was fine with that:

“Dear Alyson (sic):  Noticed, with disappointment, that you never change your status update to reflect the mood of Facebook, ei (sic) when everyone is posting their support for people who have had cancer, or fought depression, or alert their friends to child abuse, you don’t post the status update everyone else is posting. I have to defriend you.” Read the rest of this entry »

Eat.Drink.Tweet. — the official news release

Eat Drink Tweet square burgOkanagan College to host Eat.Drink.Tweet., a social media bootcamp

Conference brings together wine, food and social media education

Penticton, BC: Eat.Drink.Tweet. Sounds simple, unless you don’t know what a “tweet” is.

Teaming up with All She Wrote, a boutique communications agency specializing in social media marketing for the wine, culinary, and agricultural tourism sectors, the Penticton Campus of Okanagan College will host the inaugural Eat.Drink.Tweet. event this March.

“We’re bringing together wineries, restaurants, accommodators  and other tourism stakeholders to both learn about social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter, and at the same time practice their newfound skills at several gourmet food and wine events,” says Allison Markin of All She Wrote.

Okanagan College“Eat.Drink.Tweet. combines education, food and wine, an ideal professional development event as the Okanagan becomes a culinary destination,” says the College’s Donna Lomas, Regional Dean of the South Okanagan-Similkameen. Read the rest of this entry »

Sunday Night Social: Redefining “social unrest”

When I teach social media, I often begin with a video called the Social Media Revolution 2 (Refresh). It’s dramatic, and the statistics tend to “wow” my students, particularly those just dipping their toes into social media, for pleasure or business. As I watched a number of movements — nay, protests — unfold on social networks this week, the words “unrest”, “revolution” and “social” took on new meaning. We need only look at the situation in Egypt, now spreading to other parts of the world, to see the power that online communication holds.

EgyptThere are so many images coming from Egypt…the one that remains with me was posted to Yfrog, a service for sharing images from Twitter. It is of Christians forming a human chain around Muslims taking part in prayer.

It’s been viewed thousands of times. Could we have imagined, just a few short years ago, an image being shared worldwide so quickly, without appearing on a newscast, magazine or wire service? Read the rest of this entry »

Borschtfest recipes!

As promised,  below are several recipes from the traditional Russian dinner my parents recently prepared for some special guests. Last summer, Ma and Pa Markin graciously agreed to auction said dinner at the Penticton Art Gallery’s annual Starry, Starry Night Art Auction. Three couples were treated to the full meal deal – vodka, blini, caviar, vodka, borscht, pelmeni, vodka – and as my friend @sharpener celebrated a belated Ukranian Christmas with his family, we compared meals (and vodka) on Twitter under the hashtag #borschtfest. What does Mom want for Christmas? A Facebook class.

Okanagan CollegeDoes your mom call you when someone pokes her on Facebook? Does your BFF just not seem to grasp what a hashtag is (it’s something cool and useful on Twitter). Do you think IRL* is just a post-modern way to spell the name Earl? Have no fear, more All She Wrote classes are coming to the numerous Okanagan Colleges beginning in January, including a fun-filled social media camp for the wine and culinary industry. Sunday Night Social: Pledge me and I’ll tweet you!

I’ve run (no pun intended) this idea by a couple of people, in the hopes that someone would tell me I’m nuts. Of course, no one has done that. So here it comes:  pledge me for the 2011 MS Walk, and I’ll come-live tweet your holiday partay.

For five years I’ve been a participant in the annual MS Walk, raising funds to support the MS Society of Canada, and — with the gracious help of my gourmet parents — have held some fabulous par-tays to support the cause. First, there was Gin and Share It, a martini-themed partay (I never say “party”), and then we did one with wine, but I can’t quite remember that one. Oops. This spring — date to be determined — we’ll bring forth Grilled Cheese and Wine. Guests are asked to make a donation to the MS Walk in lieu of a hostess gift. Stay tuned for details. Sunday Night Social: Wuh Jack hockey comes to Penticton!

wjac_biggerWuh, Jack? Let me explain…the World Junior A Challenge hockey tournament descends upon Penticton and the South Okanagan Events Centre on November 8th. Nearly a week of hockey games brought to you by Hockey Canada and a dedicated team of local organizers. In my travels around the Okanagan I’ve been asking people if they’re coming to WJAC…wuh, Jack. This is also the Twitter hashtag for the event, #wjac. Read the rest of this entry »
